Day by Day 6 Days Rwanda Gorilla & Chimp Safari Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pick up in Kigali and transfer to Akagera National Park afternoon Ihema boat cruise

You will either be picked up from the airport upon arrival, or from the hotel and drive to Akagera National Park, arriving in the lodge in time for lunch and brief rest. In the afternoon, you will proceed with a boat cruise on Lake Ihema where you will be able to see several water animals including hippos, crocodiles, and a wide array of bird species along the shores and the surrounding swamps. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Morning game drive and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Rise early for a cup of coffee and set out early enough for the morning game drive with great anticipation to see lots of early risers grazing and the predators seeking out their morning kill. The park has several mammal species including the Big Five game among other game species. Return to the lodge and freshen up and thereafter, pack up exit the park, and drive to Volcanoes National Park with en route lunch. Embark on the journey arriving at Ruhengeri in the evening continue to the lodge where you will check in for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Gorilla trekking and Iby’iwacu cultural visit

Wake up early and have your breakfast with your packed lunch, head out to the park headquarters for a briefing about the rules and regulations for gorilla trekking, you will be put in groups of 8 members with a ranger well versed with the trails as you set off for the trek in the tropical forest.

The trek may last from 2- 6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas, when you find them, you will be allowed 1 hour with them to observe them go about their daily activities. Take photos (no flashlights). After exiting the forest and returning to the park offices.

Meet up with your driver guide who will drive you back to the lodge. You may choose to relax at the lodge or opt for a cultural visit to the Iby’iwacu cultural tour where you will meet and interact with the Rwanda locals and also participate in entertainment like dances among others. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Wake up early enough have your breakfast and check out of the lodge for transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park. lunch will be en route arriving in the lodge in the afternoon. Check-in and spend the rest of the day relaxing at the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

Have your breakfast early and proceed to the park headquarters to attend a briefing for the park warden on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking, accompanied by the ranger, to begin with the search for these active and playful creatures in Nyungwe forest. Trekking chimps is easier compared to gorillas, the chips are much noisier and playful jumping from one tree branch to another, chattering and laughing thus making it easy to locate them. Chimp tracking usually lasts for about 3 hours. Where you will return to the lodge for lunch and a brief rest. After, you will proceed for the canopy walk along the walk trail a swing bridge of about 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees. During the canopy walk, you will be able to see the beautiful forest with several bird species, animal species seen moving below you, and other various tree species. Later evening, you will return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Return to Kigali and departure 

Start your day with a leisurely breakfast, then prepare to check out and return to Kigali. Our guide will take you to either the airport or your accommodation. If you missed the first day’s tour of Kigali and the genocide memorial sites due to airline scheduling or time constraints, today is the perfect opportunity to visit them. Have lunch and the guide will then drop you off at Kigali airport for your departure flight back home.
