1 Day Akagera National Wildlife Park Expedition
Akagera National Park is situated in the eastern part of Rwanda, right along the border with Tanzania. African Parks, a non-profit organization, is currently managing this park in collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board, and they are excelling in their conservation efforts. In the past, there were numerous clashes between people and the park, but these were somewhat alleviated by fencing off sections of the park and launching community tours that invite visitors to explore the local communities and reap the rewards. Embarking on a wildlife safari in Akagera National Park offers a thrilling experience in Rwanda’s sole savannah park. Here, you can encounter a variety of mammal species, including majestic lions, elephants, graceful giraffes, hippos, kobs, zebras, bushbucks, waterbucks, and the recently introduced black rhinos from South Africa. This transformation has restored Akagera National Park to its former glory as a big five destination. It is also home to a variety of bird species across diverse habitats, including woodlands, swamps, lakes, and savannahs.
Today, we set off from Kigali bright and early at around 5 am for an exciting day trip to Akagera National Park, located just a couple of hours away. Akagera National Park is predominantly a sprawling savannah landscape. The journey through the northern section of the park promises thrilling encounters with Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Impalas, Waterbucks, Rhinos, the elusive leopard, and the newly introduced Lions. Enter the park through the southern gate and head to the reception for an exciting briefing about what awaits you in this remarkable place. Your day will be largely immersed in the northern sector of the park, where the diverse landscape and lush vegetation create a vibrant habitat for a variety of wildlife. The Akagera game drive typically spans around 6 hours, influenced by the fascinating animal sightings and the level of interest involved.
The tour guide will share options for lunch packages – you can choose to buy lunch or bring your own packed meal. Your journey will continue with an exhilarating game drive, culminating in your exit through the northern gate as the evening unfolds.
