Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking – Wilderness Exploration
Rise with the sun for a hearty breakfast at the lodge and gear up for an exciting day ahead filled with thrilling pursuits. The driver will guide you to the briefing that kicks off at Uwinka at 5:30 am. Chimpanzee tracking in Rwanda begins earlier than chimpanzee trekking in Kibale forest of Uganda due to the greater mobility of the chimps. In Nyungwe Forest, you can embark on two exhilarating trails for chimpanzee trekking – The Uwinka and Cyamudongo trail. Following the briefing, park officials will designate one of the trails for you based on the group size. Every group will embark on a journey to the starting point of the trek.
Chimpanzees and bonobos share a fascinating connection as our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. They are remarkably similar to us, sharing a striking 98% of our DNA. These remarkable beings possess exceptional intelligence, capable of learning sign language and mastering the use of various tools. While you spend time with them, be prepared to witness fascinating interactions such as grooming, nursing, mating, and playful antics. In contrast to mountain gorillas, chimpanzees often find themselves high up in the trees, which can pose a challenge when trying to capture great photos. They are incredibly agile and seldom remain in one spot for an extended period, much like gorillas. The great aspect is that they are quite loud and can be easily spotted, even in dense woods.
While tracking chimpanzees, you may encounter a variety of smaller primate species such as Hamlyn’s Monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, golden monkeys, Dent’s Mona Monkeys, Angola Colobus, Silver monkeys, and Olive monkeys. Three-day journey to Nyungwe, where you will encounter baboons, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, vervet monkeys, and l’hoest’s monkeys. Nyungwe forest stands out as a premier destination for birdwatching in Rwanda. In addition to small primates, keep an eye out for vibrant birds such as the Rwenzori Turaco, great blue Turaco, paradise flycatcher, and forest hornbills, among others. During the experience, the park guides will unveil fascinating details about each species encountered – their behaviors, feeding patterns, and reproductive habits. Keep in mind that spotting chimps in Nyungwe forest is not a certainty, as the likelihood stands at just 89 percent.
After encountering the chimps, you will head to the hotel for lunch. After a rejuvenating break at the hotel, you will embark on an exciting nature walk to discover a variety of birds, playful primates, and stunning waterfalls. Nyungwe National Park boasts more than 14 trails for exhilarating nature walks. The trails invite visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant flora and fauna of the park. The waterfall trail is a favorite among explorers and offers an exhilarating 3-hour journey. If time allows, you might embark on an exciting journey to track Angola Colobus in Gisakura. Following the Colobus monkeys is a much quicker endeavor compared to navigating the trails or embarking on chimpanzee trekking, as they reside right at the forest’s edge.
