Akagera National Park is situated in the northeastern part of Rwanda, right along the border with Tanzania. Established in 1934, the park underwent significant changes as much of its land was transformed into farms. In 1997, its size was diminished from over 2,500 sq km, which accounted for nearly 10% of Rwanda’s surface area, to its present size of 1,122 sq km. Since 2010, a partnership with African Parks has allowed Akagera to reclaim its past splendor. The park takes its name from the Akagera River, which winds along its eastern edge and nourishes a maze of lakes, with Lake Ihema being the most expansive among them. The forest-fringed lakes, papyrus swamps, savannah plains, and rolling highlands come together to create a breathtaking tapestry, making Akagera one of the most picturesque reserves in all of Africa.
