Nyungwe National Park is nestled in the enchanting Southwestern corner of Rwanda. Founded in 2004, it is renowned as one of the oldest and largest afro-montane forests in Africa. Spanning 970 square kilometers, this landscape is a tapestry of bogs, swamps, grasslands, and bamboo forests, inviting exploration anddiscovery at every turn. The forest rests at an impressive altitude of 3000 meters above sea level, extending all the way to the borders of Burundi, Congo, and Lake Kivu.
Two days of tracking chimpanzees in Nyungwe.Nyungwe National Park boasts an impressive array of wildlife, featuring more than 275 bird species, 400 types of trees, 75 mammals, 20 reptiles, and 12 primate species. Among the primate species are Dent’s mona monkeys, Golden monkeys, Grey cheeked mangabeys, Hamlyn’s monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Olive baboons, Red-tailed monkeys, Silver monkeys, Angola colobus, Vervet monkeys, and the common Chimpanzee. Two days Nyungwe ExpeditionThe Driver will escort you to the park offices and visitor center in Uwinka for an exciting briefing and to meet the park Rangers/Guides who will be your companions as you venture into the forests. The Guides/Rangers will share exciting insights about the rules and requirements for chimpanzee trekking. If there are numerous adventurers scheduled for the day, you will be split into two teams – one will embark on the trek from the Uwinka Visitor Centre and the other from the Cyamudongo area. In Nyungwe forest, one can encounter around 500 chimpanzees, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of life in this lush environment. As you step into the forest, the enchanting sounds of birds, primates, and insects greet you, inviting you to explore the wonders that lie ahead. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest is just as thrilling as gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park. The experience can last up to 4 hours, influenced by the day’s location of the primates. Chimpanzees roam freely, and you will find yourself trailing behind them through the vibrant forest. They stand apart from gorillas, who typically remain in one location for extended durations. The exciting aspect of chimps is their remarkable vocalizations. The constant loud screams, hoots, and barks of chimps make it simple to locate them, often before they come into view.
Two Days of Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe National Park: As you embark on your quest for the chimps, you will discover an array of stunning landscapes, vibrant birds, fascinating insects, graceful butterflies, playful primates, cascading waterfalls, and an abundance of wonders waiting to be explored. The nature enthusiast and birdwatcher will be captivated even before encountering the chimps. Once you discover them in a fixed location, you will have just one hour to engage with them. This hour does not account for the time spent tracking them, as chimpanzees are quite agile and unpredictable. During that hour with the primates, you will witness them as they feed, play, construct nests, engage in mating rituals, and playfully tease one another. Chimpanzees are our nearest kin – even closer than gorillas. Every chimp possesses its own distinct personality. Some are bold and daring, while others prefer to take a step back and enjoy their surroundings peacefully. The park Ranger will guide you on who to steer clear of.
