From May to June, frigid temperatures occur at night and dawn during the winter months. It is advisable to wear warm apparel, including gloves, scarves, beanies, and insulated coats. Is Londolozi devoid of malaria?
Negative. Londolozi is situated within the Greater Kruger National Park, a region endemic to malaria. It is imperative to emphasize that we are not medical professionals; so, consulting your physician regarding malaria prophylaxis prior to traveling to a malaria-endemic region is essential. This information is not meant to substitute for that provided by your physician. Numerous travelers visit Africa annually and, with prudent use of preventative medications, can enjoy an excellent holiday. The material provided here aims to inform rather than discourage you.
Principle One: Evade Bites
The primary principle of malaria prevention is that avoiding mosquito bites eliminates the risk of contracting malaria. Regrettably, the female Anopheles mosquito, responsible for transmitting malaria, is a discreet insect that does not emit a buzzing sound to alert you of its existence. Mosquitoes can bite at any time, but they are often most active at dawn and dusk. Utilize repellent sprays and don long-sleeved shirts and pants during the morning and evening hours. Mosquitoes can penetrate thin fabric, making it essential to apply insect repellent on both covered and uncovered skin.
The majority of the lodges feature screened windows and doors, mosquito nets, air conditioning, and fans. These measures assist in preventing bites but should not be employed in isolation.
Regulation Two: Administration of Antimalarial Tablets
No malaria prophylactic is 100% successful, as malaria parasites develop resistance to many medications. It is essential to consult your physician or travel clinic for recommendations on the most suitable prophylactic for you. Travelers must consistently adhere to the specified tablet regimen and maintain the dosage even after departing from the malaria-endemic region.
Chloroquine, Proguanil, and Maloprim: In specific regions of Africa (north of South Africa), malaria has developed resistance to Chloroquine, resulting in a decline in the popularity and usage of these medications.
Mefloquine (Larium): For many years, Larium has faced much criticism. It is an efficacious malaria prophylactic; nevertheless, it must be administered with caution, as those with a history of psychiatric disorders may experience adverse side effects
Malarone: This prophylactic exhibits few adverse effects and, with a straightforward daily dosage, is gaining popularity among travelers. Malarone has been introduced in the UK in a pediatric version, marking it as the first malaria tablet specifically created for children. It is licensed in the USA, Denmark, and is progressively becoming available in Europe. The pediatric formulation is a chewable, once-daily dosage that should be initiated one day prior to the commencement of travel.

This is the recommended prophylactic; however, we strongly advise you to see your physician regarding your individual suitability before traveling.
Doxycycline: This antibiotic serves as a viable option to conventional anti-malarial medications for several individuals. Doxycycline can increase photosensitivity, and the impact of antibiotics on contraceptive pills is well established. Travelers may return from their holiday with more than just a suntan.
Garlic, Vitamin B, and Chilli are mere folk remedies and should not be employed as preventive measures against Malaria.
Rule 3: Monitor for signs and adhere to your preventive regimen!
If you experience any flu-like symptoms (nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, sweating, headache, or muscle pain) upon your return or during the balance of your stay, it is advisable to undergo a malaria test for precautionary measures. Malaria exhibits favorable outcomes with prompt intervention. Ensure the completion of your preventive regimen, even after departing from a malaria-endemic region.
Guidelines for Safari Etiquette
The pinnacle of any safari in Kruger National Park is the exploration of the wilderness and wildlife during a game drive or bush walk. Experiencing remarkable species in their natural habitat is extraordinary; but, we strongly encourage you to adhere to the principles below to promote the long-term preservation of South Africa’s cherished Kruger Park.
Guidelines for Safari Etiquette
Kindly honor your environment and the fauna by adhering to these directives:
- Retrieve solely images and memories! Refrain from extracting natural objects (rocks, flowers, plants, etc.) from Kruger Park or any reserves. It disturbs the local ecosystem.
- Refrain from attempting to capture the animals’ attention through sound imitation, clapping, object throwing, or any other methods.
- Avoid provoking or cornering wild animals, as this may elicit an unpredictable and potentially hazardous response.
The flora in Kruger Park is highly delicate, and off-road driving results in erosion. Engage in off-road activities just with a ranger and never independently.
- Acknowledge that you are a guest in the animals’ natural habitat; therefore, observe them quietly and with minimal disruption to their natural behaviors. Boisterous conversation on game drives will deter the animals.
- Refrain from littering! In addition to being unsightly, garbage discarded on the ground can suffocate or poison wildlife and avians.
The African bush is arid, very flammable, and wildfires can result in significant animal fatalities. Please refrain from smoking during game drives.
- Honor your driver/guide’s assessment on your distance from specific wildlife. Do not compel him to position the car nearer for an improved photograph. A vehicle operating in proximity can obstruct a hunt or compel animals to forsake a hard-earned food.
Always heed your guide’s counsel – he is the authority! Do not hesitate to inquire if you have any uncertainties.
- Avoid approaching wild animals on foot, particularly near your resort or campsite where they have become habituated to human presence.
What is the historical background of Londolozi?
The narrative of the Varty and Taylor families—conservation dynasties committed to preserving a fragment of Africa’s Eden—constitutes the history of Londolozi.
The inception of the Londolozi vision occurred over eighty years ago when two friends – the great grandfathers of the Varty and Taylor families – first beheld the formidable Sand River. The vision and possibilities that these two individuals perceived in the untouched wilderness have persisted throughout the years beside the same granite formations of the river.
The camp was established along the banks of the river, where the water is crystalline and the bushveld extends to the horizon. The inaugural campfire was constructed in the presence of roaring lions, from which Londolozi transformed into one of the most coveted ecotourism locations globally.
For two generations, the family entertained presidents and princesses while relinquishing its wild game to the hunter’s firearm. This concluded thirty-five years ago under the stewardship of John, Dave, and Shan Varty. The family together envisioned establishing a world-class resort and formulating a model for contemporary conservation in Southern Africa.
The farm was called Londolozi, originating from the Zulu term ‘to protect’. The new name represented the family’s objective to create a refuge for all forms of life. During the 1970s and 1980s, Londolozi’s primary objective was to illustrate the economic feasibility of wildlife in a region fragmented by racism, barriers, and division. The 1990s introduced renewed optimism and faith in togetherness, trust, and peace. This period allowed Londolozi to convey her message of collaboration between wildlife and humanity throughout the African continent and to promote the vision of animals financing conservation efforts.
The new millennium presents novel difficulties and opportunities, and Londolozi will, as in the past, endeavor to contribute to the establishment of a new order grounded in the principles of nature.
This new chapter is characterized by the commitment to serve and to establish a distinctive environment, ensuring that visitors, guests, and friends of Londolozi are deeply impacted by their experiences and inspired to realize their fullest potential.
“Throughout my extensive journey to liberation, I was afforded the exceptional opportunity to visit Londolozi.” I observed individuals of diverse ethnicities coexisting peacefully among the splendor of the natural world. “Londolozi embodies the vision I hold for the future of environmental conservation in our nation.” – Nelson Mandela
