Day 4: Embark on a hike from Omuka Kizza to the enchanting Mahoma Lake

You traverse the path winding through the forest, drawing closer to a slender ridge blanketed in moss as you ascend to 3,515 metres, moving through a stunning landscape adorned with towering heather trees draped in vibrant green moss. The Mountain elephant footprints weaving through the bamboo and heather forest are hard to overlook, and you might just be fortunate enough to spot them quenching their thirst at the hot spring. The ridge opens up to Rukenga Valley, a place where you can discover the enchanting everlasting flowers, known as mimulopsis eliotti, alongside the towering giant lobelia. You settle in for the night at Mahoma Lake camp, and if the sky is clear, you are treated to breathtaking views of Mount Stanley, Mt. Baker, and the Portal Peaks.

The path winds through the village of Machame, nestled on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now step beyond the park gate and embark on a journey through the rain forest along a twisting trail that ascends a ridge. As you descend, the path may become a bit treacherous with mud and slick spots. Gaiters and trekking poles are essential gear for this journey. We journey onward for a brief stretch until we arrive at the Machame Camp.

Day 12 of the 22 Days Ultimate East Africa Adventure Safari to Uganda, Tanzania & Kenya featuring the ascent from Shira Camp to Lava Tower and onward to Barranco Camp

Elevation (m): 3840m to 4630m to 3860m Elevation (ft): 12,600ft to 12,700ft Distance: 15 km Walking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Semi-desert From the Shira Plateau, we venture east up a ridge, navigating past the junction that leads to the majestic peak of Kibo. As we proceed, our path shifts to the South East, leading us to the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Not long after the tower, we arrive at the second junction that takes us up to the Arrow Glacier, standing at an impressive altitude of 4,876 meters. We now embark on our descent to the Barranco Hut, perched at an altitude of 3,860 meters. Here we pause, savor our meal, and spend the night. Even though you finish the day at the same height as when you began, this day holds great significance for acclimatization and will aid your body in gearing up for the summit challenge ahead.

We journey onward to the Barafu Hut. You have conquered the South Circuit, revealing breathtaking vistas of the summit from a variety of perspectives. Here we set up our camp, take a moment to relax, savor our dinner, and gear up for the exciting journey to the summit. From this vantage point, the majestic peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo rise into view.

You embark on a journey to the northwest, climbing through the rugged scree as you make your way to Stella Point on the crater rim. This segment of the trek presents the greatest mental and physical challenges. At Stella Point (5685m), you will take a brief pause and be greeted by an awe-inspiring sunrise that you will not soon forget (weather permitting). From Stella Point, prepare for a snowy adventure as you make your way up to the summit over the next hour. At Uhuru Peak, you stand at the pinnacle of Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent. Those who move swiftly will catch the breathtaking sunrise from the peak. The nights at these elevations can be quite chilly, but as the hiking day comes to a close, the warmth will embrace you. You will need to pack outfits for every thrilling scenario that comes your way. From the summit, we now begin our thrilling descent straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, pausing at Barafu for a delightful lunch. Be sure to bring gaiters and trekking poles for navigating the loose gravel on your descent. Mweka Camp is nestled in the upper forest, where the late afternoon often brings a touch of mist or rain, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. As the sun sets, we savor our final meal on the mountain, followed by a restful night filled with dreams of our exhilarating day.

From the gate, journey onward for another hour to reach Mweka Village. A vehicle will be waiting for you at Mweka village to whisk you away to the hotel for a night of relaxation.
