5-Day Safari: From the Beach to 3 National Parks Detailed itinerary
Day 1: A Relaxing Morning on the Beach and a Scenic Drive to Tsavo East National Park
The journey begins on the tranquil shores of the Indian Ocean, where the morning is spent basking in the soft sands of Mombasa or Diani Beach. The turquoise waters and the rhythmic waves set the tone for a perfect start. After breakfast, the adventure begins with a scenic drive to Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya’s largest and oldest parks, known for its dramatic landscapes and rich wildlife.
Upon arrival, a game drive introduces you to the iconic “red elephants” of Tsavo, so named because of the red-dust coating they acquire from rolling in the park’s soil. The vast savannahs, dotted with baobab trees, are home to lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and a plethora of bird species. As the sun sets, you arrive at your lodge or luxury tented camp within the park, where dinner is served under a canopy of stars.
Meal plan: Lunch and dinner
Day 2: Tsavo West National Park – Land of Lava and Mzima Springs
After an early breakfast, you head to the neighboring Tsavo West National Park, a park renowned for its rugged beauty and unique geological features. The journey takes you through a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity, with highlights including the Shetani Lava Flows.
A stop at Mzima Springs offers a chance to observe hippos and crocodiles in crystal-clear waters. A glass-bottomed viewing platform provides a rare underwater glimpse of fish and aquatic life. The afternoon game drive reveals Tsavo West’s famed predators, such as leopards and lions, alongside sightings of zebras, hartebeests, and elephants. The day ends at a lodge or camp offering panoramic views of the Chyulu Hills.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Amboseli National Park – The Majestic Kilimanjaro Backdrop
On Day 3, you journey to Amboseli National Park, famous for its breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Known as the “Land of Giants,” Amboseli is celebrated for its large herds of elephants, often seen silhouetted against the dramatic backdrop of the mountain.
A morning and afternoon game drive provide ample opportunities to spot cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, and numerous bird species, including flamingos. Between game drives, you can relax at your lodge or camp, soaking in the views of the snow-capped Kilimanjaro. The day closes with a spectacular sunset, where the fading light paints the mountain in hues of orange and pink.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary
The next destination is the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a private conservancy that offers an intimate and exclusive wildlife experience. Unlike the larger parks, the sanctuary’s smaller size allows for closer and more frequent wildlife encounters.
The day is filled with activities such as game drives, guided nature walks, and bird-watching. The sanctuary is home to elephants, lions, and antelopes, as well as over 300 bird species. Accommodations here are often elevated lodges, providing unique views of watering holes where animals gather, especially at dusk.
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Sunrise Safari and Return to the Beach
The final day begins with a sunrise safari, a magical time to witness animals at their most active. After breakfast, you embark on a leisurely drive back to the coast, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past days.
Arriving back at the beach, you can relax and unwind, enjoying the soothing sound of the waves as you savor the memories of a journey that seamlessly blended the allure of the ocean with the thrill of the wilderness.
