Rwanda’s Climate and Weather
Rwanda has a tropical highland climate that is delightfully warm all year due to its high altitude and closeness to the equator. The greatest park of the nation is located on a plateau at a height of around 1500 meters / 5000 feet above sea level. Only in the westernmost part along the Rusizi River, which marks the boundary with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, does the altitude drop below a thousand meters / 3300 feet, with temperatures sometimes reaching 35 degrees Celsius / 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
The annual precipitation varies from 1,000 to 1400 mm / 40 to 55 inches, depending on the location. A dry spell lasts from June to August, with July being the driest month. The rainy season lasts from September to May. This rainy season is further broken into two parts: March-May and September-November. While the decline in rainfall from December to February is generally minor, it is more noticeable in the north, where it goes below 100 mm / 4 inches each month. Notably, the rainy season is most strong from March to May, with April and May often receiving more over 150 mm / 6 inches of precipitation every month.
